WordPress SEO Checklist for Beginners: 15 Steps to Rank Higher on Google

Good SEO starts with a technically sound website and genuinely helpful content. This beginner-friendly WordPress SEO checklist covers the steps that matter most. No one can promise a specific Google ranking, but completing these tasks gives your pages the best chance to be found.

Set up the foundation

1. Choose a clean permalink structure

In Settings, Permalinks, use the Post name option so URLs are short and readable, such as /wordpress-seo-checklist/.

2. Make sure search engines can index your site

In Settings, Reading, confirm that “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is not ticked.

3. Install one SEO plugin

Plugins such as Rank Math, Yoast SEO or SEOPress help you edit titles, meta descriptions and sitemaps. Install only one at a time.

4. Use HTTPS

Install an SSL certificate and redirect all HTTP URLs to HTTPS.

5. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console

Verify your site in Google Search Console and submit your XML sitemap so Google can discover your pages, and use the reports to find indexing and mobile problems.

Optimize each page

6. Research your keywords

Think about what your customers actually type into Google. Pick one main phrase per page, plus a few related phrases, and match the search intent: informational, comparison or ready-to-hire.

7. Write a clear title tag

Keep titles under about 60 characters, put the main keyword near the front and make them appealing to click.

8. Write a useful meta description

Around 150 to 160 characters that summarize the page and invite the click. It does not directly boost rankings but improves click-through.

9. Use one H1 and logical subheadings

Use a single H1 for the page topic and H2 or H3 headings to organize sections.

10. Optimize images

Compress images, use descriptive file names and add alt text that describes what the image shows.

11. Add internal links

Link related pages and posts together using descriptive anchor text. This helps visitors and search engines understand your site structure.

Build quality and trust

12. Publish original, helpful content

Answer questions thoroughly, in your own words, with real experience and accurate details. Thin or copied content rarely performs.

13. Show who is behind the website

Add About and Contact pages, real business details, and a privacy policy. This builds trust with visitors and search engines.

14. Make the site fast and mobile-friendly

Most searches happen on phones. Test on real devices and follow our guide to speeding up WordPress.

15. Earn links naturally

Share your best content, list your business in relevant directories, and create resources others want to reference. Avoid buying links.

Track and improve

Check Google Search Console monthly to see which queries bring impressions, then update older pages with fresh information. SEO is a long-term process, and results usually take weeks or months.

Conclusion

Work through this checklist one step at a time, starting with the technical foundation, then page optimization and content quality. If you would rather have an expert handle it, explore our WordPress speed and SEO optimization service.
